About the Movie

Shrek is an American animated film. Produced by Dreamworks Animation and directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, it was released in 2001. This children’s comedy film is a fairy tale parody adapted from William Steig’s picture book, Shrek! Which was released in 1990.

The film was a huge success and enabled DreamWorks Studios (which Spielberg co-founded) to position itself as a big competitor to Pixar (which was directed by Steve Jobs at the time) in the field of animation, especially in 3D. This enthusiasm for a partner drove its producers to make it a franchise. It was selected in competition at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival and was the first film to win the Oscar award for best animated film in 2002.

In 2020, the film was selected by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for preservation there, as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant, and thus became the first animated film, and the first Feature film by DreamWorks, that was not produced or distributed by the Disney Company to receive this honor.

An anti-social ogre, Shrek, lives peacefully and happily in the dirt in the middle of a swamp that he believes is a haven of peace. But one day, his space was crowded with fairy creatures that were expelled by the tyrannical Lord Farquad.

Shrek, surrounded by a very talkative donkey, goes to ask the Lord to be held accountable. But he ordered him to go and rescue Princess Fiona, imprisoned at the top of a dungeon guarded by a dragon, and return her to him to marry her and become king, in exchange for driving the squatters out of his swamp.

Shrek embarks on his quest but soon falls in love with the princess Fiona who hides a terrifying secret that will lead Shrek and his companion the donkey on an exciting and perilous adventure.
